Case Studies

The research presents the identified local vernacular flood adaptation measures that the urban slum dwellers adopt based on the lessons and experiences from the past events in the assessed cities of Jakarta in Indonesia, Dhaka in Bangladesh. Mumbai, Surat and Kolkata, the three coastal cities are assessed in India. The identification of the measures is done through case-study-analysis approach involving direct observations, interpretation from collected images and literature review of the formal policies, action plans and previously published research. Together, they are not meant to offer an exhaustive collection but rather a significant atlas of measures that endorse reliable research while contributing towards the creation of the lexicon of flood adaptation for coastal urban slums.
